Remember how magical it was as a kid to drive around at night, oohing and awing at elaborate holiday displays on festive family’s houses? Now you might be the one really filled with Christmas spirit, setting up holiday decorations all over the front yard.
As a kid, you never had to worry about the damage those decorations might do to the yard, but as an adult, you’re more likely to keep it in mind. Follow these tips and be careful with these holiday items so that they do not cause damage to your lawn!
Placing heavy items on mulched areas, patios, or really anywhere the grass does not grow can prevent damage to your lawn. If you like to use inflatable decorations, be sure to move them around every two weeks. Even the lightweight decorations can still cause the grass to die underneath if left in the same place too long.
Protect Existing Landscaping
If you will be staking anything into the ground, be careful of in-ground sprinkler system heads! You also want to be sure your trees and bushes are not under stress from the lights strung on them or the decorations bumping against them. Remember to account for the extra weight of fallen snow and the gusty winds of a blizzard to protect your existing landscaping.
Everyone favorite way to adorn their home is with lots of lights! Just be sure you put your lights on a timer so there’s less foot traffic all over your lawn. Only use decorations, lights, and extension cords rated for outdoor use. Check each year to ensure nothing is damaged to prevent electrical fires.
With these warnings in mind, you can get out in the yard and fill it up with Santas, reindeer, lights, and inflatable snowmen. Keep your lawn in mind and you will be rewarded with little to no damage to your grass come springtime. From all of us at Ehlinger Lawn Services – Happy Holidays!
